
Hong Kong is the fifth most preferred place for Australian expats
There are around 35,000 Australian expats in the SAR.
Hong Kong trails behind Singapore to occupy the fifth best country for Australian expats with an overall score of 69.13, according to the Atlas Wealth Management Expat Insights Survey.
The population of the Australian expat community in the SAR is estimated at 35,000 with the major motivation for relocation being financial benefits and career growth.
In fact, Hong Kong emerged as the third best career destination for Australian foreign workers thanks to its status as a the region’s financial hub.
Although the city has high cost of living with a separate survey from Mercer hailing Hong Kong as the most expensive expat location in the world, 73% of Australian expats said that they are able to save more as they have higher disposable incomes than they would in Australia.

Hong Kong also performs strongly in other categories after ranking 5th in the financial destination and 11th in the lifestyle category.
However, the SAR performs poorly in the Family category with a rank of 15th as 42% believe that their children have worse quality of life in the SAR than they would have in their home country.

Boosted by a strong economy characterised by low taxes and good wages, Singapore has taken the crown as the top country for Australian expats. Japan, Netherlands and China occupy the second, third and fourth place.
The Atlas Wealth Management Expat Insights Survey assesses expat liveability based on four categories including lifestyle, career, financial and family.
