2 in 3 tech workers worry about future tech setups despite skill upgrades: study

They felt unequipped to manage their knowledge in machine learning, AI and blockchain.

Without improvement in time and budget constraints, 67% of Hong Kong tech professionals say they will be unable to confidently manage future innovations, even though 99% of respondents said they had worked to develop a skill over the past 12 months, according to findings from IT management software provider SolarWinds’ IT Trends Report 2019.

Tech pros in Hong Kong said they felt unequipped to manage their skill sets are in machine and/or deep learning (56%), artificial intelligence (52%) and blockchain (49%).

The report, which studies the state of skills and career development for technology professionals, found that when it comes to the next three to five years, Hong Kong’s tech professionals are looking to develop skills in areas like hybrid IT deployment monitoring and management, and data science and analytics, whilst eyeing career paths such as data science and coding.

Hong Kong tech professionals have been prioritising hybrid IT deployment monitoring in systems and infrastructure management (39%), coding and scripting (39%), and systems and infrastructure management (37%).

According to Joe Kim, executive vice president and global chief technology officer of SolarWinds, history has proven that there is a direct correlation between technology and business performance.

Key findings also showed a lack of confidence in skill sets that was consistent across business size, with 38% of small business tech pros unconfident in their ability to manage environments into the near future with current skill sets, compared to 33% of medium-size tech pros and 40% of enterprise tech pros who shared this sentiment.

In the next three to five years, the top two skills tech pros plan to develop are hybrid IT deployment monitoring and management (51%) and data science and analytics (49%), the report found.
