
Hong Kong industries need more workers
Skills upgrading vital to improving industry competitiveness.
Hong Kong’s industries are into high value-added skills development and is allotting more resources to upgrade workers’ skills, said Secretary Commerce & Economic Development Gregory So.
Speaking at the Professional Validation Council of Hong Kong Industries’ award presentation ceremony yesterday, so noted there were 115,000 people in the industry sector last year, a number comprising 3.2% of the total workforce.
So said the sector requires more skilled labourers and professional workers to cope with regional competition. He said the council has sought to upgrade the professional standard in the sector and contributes to the development of Hong Kong's industries.
The council formulates the qualifications in accordance with courses provided by tertiary institutions and colleges. It will also provide training courses for students to visit factories and other industries to broaden their horizons.
