Election process for Hong Kong deputies starts
Those willing to become members of Hong Kong’s electoral council are required to register at the relevant office in Hong Kong between July 10 and 25.
The process for electing Hong Kong’s deputies to the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) began early this week.
The general office of the NPC Standing Committee sent letters to eligible persons in Hong Kong asking them if they wish to become members of electoral council. This council will elect Hong Kong’s 36 deputies to the 12th NPC.
Over 1,800 people are eligible to be members of Hong Kong's electoral council, or one-third more than the last electoral council. Hong Kong will have the same number of deputies as in the current 11th NPC that will end its term in March 2013.
Elections of the 12th NPC deputies from Hong Kong will be conducted by the NPC Standing Committee. The committee will publish a list of names of the members of the electoral council.
The electoral council of Hong Kong will consist of the members of the electoral council of Hong Kong for the election of deputies to the 11th NPC; members of the 11th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference from Hong Kong who are not on that electoral council and Chinese citizens on the election committee for the fourth term Chief Executive of the Hong Kong SAR, excluding those who are not willing to serve on the new electoral council.
